Blogging is now been used by many webmasters, why? Blogging is great for adding new content to your domain and increasing the number of relevant key terms your site can be found with. On top of this it also gives you an avenue to provide readers with something to come back for, providing unique quality content will drive links to your pages and increase your online visibility.

There are ways in which we can super optimise our blogs to ensure they are pulling in as much search engine traffic as possible. You see when most people think about search engine optimisation, they think about ranking for the high traffic terms, this is sort of true but in order to have a high traffic website you need to consider the many long tail terms searchers might be using. Remember the majority of searches on Google are long tail and low competition, therefore you cannot afford to miss out on the opportunity to optimise for them.

So we have a blog, were going to write some interesting posts to engage readers and hopefully draw them back to the site, however we need to mindful of the keywords they might use to find the post, a bit of keyword research goes a long way here.

So a natural place to start would be the Google keyword tool, enter some search terms connected with your post content, your not looking for the competitive terms here you are looking for the low traffic long tail terms these are going to be the easiest to target from an SEO perspective.

Ensure you make a list of all the low competition keywords as you make your way through the search terms. It is a good idea to have the target keywords near by so you have them in mind when writing the post. The idea here is to use as many of your low competition terms as possible, using the most relevant as the post title and in the url slug.

The best way to incorporate all the keywords you want to target naturally is to write long posts, this will give you more space and opportunity to use the many variations.

Now you have to think realistically about the traffic, each post should drive anywhere between 15 and 30 visits per month, yep this is low traffic but imagine if you optimised every post in this way. If you had a blog with 1000 posts all optimised in this way that would be close to 30,000 visits a month just by simply optimising some of the posts. This is so easy and ignoring it is a huge missed opportunity, every webmaster needs to tak advantage of it.

Sometimes called inbound links, backlinks are the oxygen of search engine positioning and traffic generation. Backlinks have three key elements, the web page from which the backlinks come from, the anchor text of the backlinks and what’s on the page to which the backlinks directs the visitor to.

The amount of backlinks

The volume of backlinks to a page is one of the key properties the search engines consider when deciding where to position the page in the SERPS (Search Engine Page Results).

The source of the backlinks

The pages from which backlinks originate pass ‘authority’ and traffic to the page to which the backlinks point. So it follows that pages with backlinks from ‘trusted pages will receive fairer consideration from the search engines. Pages from sources such as educational (.edu) or government (.gov) sites naturally posess more trust and authority.

Google Page Rank

Backlinks from web pages with high page rank (a ‘reward’ given by Google to any page that it considers over a period to have attracted, sustained and continued to accumulate relevant backlinks) pass some of their page rank via the backlink to the target page.

The ‘anchor text’

Just like a label, the backlink anchor text influences the search engines classification of the backlink. Relevance is the guiding principle for every search engine algorithms and it follows if the information on the page is about ‘drying chillis” then it is from a search engine’s point of view, more valuable for the backlink’s anchor text to this page to contain the word ‘chilli’ as opposed to a related term such as ‘drying spices’.

Common mistakes

The majority people screw up their backlinks building activities because they fixate on quantity as opposed to quality of backlinks. Having a substantial amount of backlinks to your page doesn’t automatically mean the search engines will view your page as relevant.

How to manufacture backlinks

So let me tell you my fail safe process for getting backlinks that will make the search engines take notice of you and bring the right type and relevant visitors to your web site.

When you start you should focus on choosing the correct keywords.

Your objective should be to manufacture a keyword cloud.

I most often start with a single primary keyword or key phrase which has substantial visitor traffic.

To find out the amount of visitor traffic is being generated by searches for my top level keyword I use the Google keyword analyzer tool.

I analyse words and search phrases associated with my ‘top’ level phrase and create my ‘cloud’.

I then create content in the form of articles and videos containing backlinks with the right ‘anchor text’ to my ‘money’ or ‘target’ page and disperse these to the various directories.

My guiding principle is to author content that will attract traffic and compel them to follow the backlinks to my money pages as well as send backlinks.

The SEM trend has changed and you need to take advantage of it! Every day more and more blogs are being created as mini news websites or content centers that contain significant information and links. It has become the search engine marketing trend.

In the past, search engines only visited major news websites, assuming they were the ones who were the ultimate source for the latest content to be found online. Blogs have now outpaced several media outlets online (yea!), due to their ability to deliver and publish fresh information to the public faster. This is key…

In order to get noticed by the search engines, you need to get your content published quickly. Search engines look for the freshest, more relevant and valuable information they can find. By publishing often, and well, you ensure the engines will come back to your blog more and more often to see what you have to offer. More search engine visits you get usually means the more real people you will get as a result.

Blogs have a natural relationship with the search engines, and being such a magnet, will attract the spiders more often if they detect an update from it. This results in your content being available to the searching public in a matter of hours or days, instead of potentially waiting months like you would with a traditional website set up.

As an example, I recently made a post under my Rambles category here at iBlogaholic about a cool tip for snagging dust bunnies out of tight places. When I checked Google for my latest page indexing, my dust bunny post was already indexed. It had only been 5 hours.

The result: There should now be no reason for anyone world wide to ever have another dust bunny!
