How To Set Up A Self-Hosted Wordpress Blog
May 11, 2009 by Brie
So you want to start blogging… Excellent! You now need to set up your blog. There are a few choices available; use an existing free shared blogging platform such as Blogger, Typepad, or Wordpress.com, or you can choose to brand yourself by registering a domain name and hosting the blog yourself using Wordpress.
Using a free shared blogging platform is easy, and obviously free, but it does have limitations for those of you who have big plans for your blog. This is why we recommend the self hosted Wordpress method. This method is not free, but will allow your blog to grow, and removes all the obstacles that you will encounter with a shared blogging service.
Here’s how easy it is to set up a self-hosted Wordpress blog:
#1. Register a domain name for your blog. This helps brand your name and/or niche better than using free hosted domains. My parents prefer to use GoDaddy. You can too.
#2. Use your new domain name to open a hosting account for your blog. One of the best hosting services available for a reasonable cost is HostGator. They give you unlimited usage for your blog and have a great customer support division if you ever need help. They also use cPanel which is perfect for setting up your word press blog quickly.
#3. Once you have received your welcome email from Hostgator, it will tell you what your nameservers are for your domain name. These nameservers are important and tell the world wide web where everyone can find your domain. So log into your Godaddy account, select Nameservers from your domain menu, select Custom Nameservers and enter in the two names Hostgator provided.
#4 Wait about an hour and you then should be abot to log into your cPanel. This is the control panel that you will use for your hosting account. Hostgator will have let you know what your login details are in the welcome email you received.
#5. Once inside your cPanel, look down the list of icons until you find Fantastico or Fantastico DeLuxe near the bottom. Click this to see the list of scripts that can be added to your website. Find ‘wordpress blog’ on the list and click. This will bring you to an installation page that will, within 2 clicks of your mouse, install wordpress on your domain name.
Follow the simple instructions provided, click install, and voila, you now have your own self hosted wordpress blog ready to start making money!

I have always struggled to set up my own blog on the wordpress instead i try to host it in blogspot and with these useful tips, now i am going to try out these at my next latest blog soon. Thank you.
Something very important that you have to consider is how serious are you for your website. If you need a small website to experiment with different blogging platforms, then even a free web hosting account may serve you well. On the contrary, if you plan to establish a serious blog, from which you also dream that you will get a fat check each month, your only way it to register with a reliable web hosting company for a professional hosting plan. Domain registration, preferable with .com extension, will be your first step for both paths. Finally, it is up to you to transform your passion to an empire.
