WordPress 2.8 Syntax Highlighting Bug Fix

June 15, 2009 by Brie

Anyone using WordPress will be well aware that the much anticipated 2.8 version became available for download/upgrade late last week. I am loving all of the new features, and will explain those in more detail in a future post – except one. The syntax highlighting.

It’s nasty! It completely locks up my machine and browser every time I try and edit 1 little section. That is, if I can even click on the section I want to edit without the cursor zooming back up to the top of the page. Then when I want to paste, it asks for permission (which I ‘allow’) only to have it paste a nice little ‘v’. Grrrrr. Then to top it off, extra blank lines of code are randomly added to the stylesheet on every click of the ‘update file’ button. Pretty soon my css page is going to be thousands of lines long!

Being a custom blog designer, having a functional editor for CSS and php pages is crucial. I dug for 2 days on how to fix this error. No one seemed to know. Then viola – I found it! (It’s so simple, that I am almost embarrased that I didn’t see it before….)

1. Go to Appearance–> Editor
2. Click on the new Screen Options button that appears in the top right corner of the page, under your admin Log Out link.
3. Click the Disable Syntax Highlighting link that appears.
4. Jump for joy – your editor is now fixed

I really hope this helps at least one other person, who has pulled their hair out over this ‘bug’, for the last few days. And yes, it can be re-enabled for those of you who actually miss it :)

  1. Thanks for the great post. It will save me from blowing up my old computer for moving so slow. That really speeds up editing in the css.

    Thanks again.
